Our story
Meppen is a esh village where people have lived for about 3500 years. The farms of today stand roughly on the spots of the farms of old. Our farm is much younger: it has stood here since 1939.
Meppen
The history of Meppen goes back to around 5000 BC. A burial ground from that time has been excavated in Meppen, with objects from that era; the best-known find is a bronze bucket from the Bronze Age.
Because fertilizing methods improved, permanent habitation in the esh village became possible around 1500 BC. The location was carefully chosen with regard to the brook and the fields. That permanent habitation continues to this day.
Timeline
The Mepper farmer Vos builds the farm on the "de Trappenberg", a sand hill that was dug away for it. In 1950 the Horsting family buys the farm, which remains a farming business until the mid-1970s.
The Amsterdam Coenen family converts the pig stable into group accommodation. In 1990 a hectare of grassland is added and the pond is dug, with the banks of the excavated soil still lying there today.
Aart Jan and Jill buy the camping farm and continue as a campsite. Every winter they tackle something: electricity and sanitary facilities in 2002, the Windroos in 2005, the sheep pasture with a connection to the Mepper Hooilanden in 2006, the comfort pitches in 2010 and the current sanitary facilities in 2012.
The site receives a tourist purpose, and in the converted farm there are 2 holiday apartments. Out of sustainability they choose a central heating system fueled by wood chips, which supplies heating and hot water for the entire site. The chips now come from an ecologically managed forest. In 2009 the name changes to Erfgoed de Boemerang, to do more justice to the nature and atmosphere of the whole site.
Jan and Tresia Withoff lease the Erfgoed for three years and improve the service and the decor. In 2015 the ANWB names the Boemerang the charm camping of the Netherlands. In 2017 two adjoining plots are added: literally room to dream about the future.
After 17 years in ICT and visiting no fewer than 25 campsites, we become owners in January 2020. In April 2020 we receive a permit for the reception building.
In April 2020 we have to close for the entire month. From 15 May we may open on a limited basis, only on comfort pitches 22 through 37 and without sanitary facilities. On 10 June the sanitary facilities reopen, with a sliding system at the showers and extra ventilation. After that we are fully booked for the rest of 2020 and all of 2021.
In the winter of 2021, pitches 3 through 15 receive water and sewage: 12 comfort pitches added, plus a new water tap point at the N-pitches. We buy 4 chalets to renovate completely: Schaap is ready for 2022, Kip in 2023, Alpaca in April 2024 and Eekhoorn in mid-June 2024. In April 2022 Liselotje and Josefien, our alpacas, arrive. And extra lighting is added along the paths to the N-pitches.
The peace of the surroundings, the site, the home, the sanitary facilities: everything is right for us. As you can see, there are still plenty of developments. To be continued!
